South Park Cemetery is the only standing remnant right in the heart of the city which reminds one that one what now is the most upscale and posh street of the city was once full of jungles, thickets and marshes infested with wild animals.  It is the largest non-Church cemetery in India and is a treasure trove of history, heritage and different forms of architecture. The stories of people who lie in rest here give such insights into the society of those times, the position of women, the medical facilities, and the influence of religions like no other place in the city. The moss-covered paths, the age-old colonnades, and the mammoth tombs in various shapes and sizes definitely leaves one mesmerized about the grandeur that Calcutta once was even in death.
