For 200 years, a British joint-stock firm by the name of East India Company (EIC) looted and plundered India to a state of extreme poverty. Based out of Kolkata, the EIC took control of two-thirds of the country’s economy and brought it down from 23% of global GDP to a sad 3%. Assuming military power, they defeated the Mughals, the Sikhs, the Marathas, Tipu Sultan and also all kinds of Mutineers. The company was responsible for causing 2 famines in Bengal leading to the death of lakhs of people. Such was the damaging impact of the British Raj!
Many architectures and buildings of the East India Company remain as a testimony to the dark past. Be a part of our curated walk on the 1st of Dec as we explore the many historic sites of the company’s presence in Kolkata- Belvedere, St. John’s Church, Government House, The Black Hole of Calcutta, Writers Building, South Park Street Cemetery and Lower Circular Road Cemetery.
