Rediscover the fading regality of the Nawabi Era in what is known as the ‘Chota Lucknow’ in Kolkata, Metiaburj. Located on the fringes of the city, Metiaburj was once the home of the last Nawab in Kolkata. According to history, Nawab Wajid Ali Shah who had arrived in Kolkata in 1856 was deeply homesick. To re-establish a connection with his homeland, he converted Metiaburj into a Lucknow lookalike place. His desire to recreate Lucknow in Kolkata cost him his annual allowance of 12 lakhs and gave us a piece of history to treasure.
Join us on the 20th as we kick-start our historic Metiaburj Walk from the Surinam Ghat at 8am where thousands of labourers left for Surinam to work in sugarcane fields in 1870s. Then we visit Bichali Ghat where Wajid Ali landed upon his arrival in Kolkata. Next we tour the Sibtainabad Imambara built by him and visit his grave. In between we shall make a quick detour to a Kite Shop, an important source of cottage industry.
